UPGRADED PISTON RINGS - Quite possibly the biggest single improvement you can make to the Mercedes OM617 Turbo Diesel Engine. Say "Bye Bye" to blow-by!
The biggest problem of the OM617 is the sloppy piston ring design that generates massive blow-by, even when new/rebuilt.
I've been working with Total Seal Piston Rings to develop my own proprietary OM617 piston ring package. I long thought a newly designed piston would be required to make these improvements, but Total Seal assures me the OEM rings are the culprit, and a new piston shouldn't be necessary to solve our problems.
Top Ring - A ductile iron, chrome-face ring. Chrome is extremely tough - that's why we use it on hydraulic cylinder shafts.
2nd Ring - The famous Gapless Rings. I've been dreaming about putting these in an OM617 for many years! Not only should these drastically reduce blow-by, they should in turn reduce fuel dilution of oil (think 6.4 powerstroke) and improve cold starts because of better cold state compression.
Oil Ring - Total Seal believes their 3-piece design outperforms the OEM European 2-piece design hands down.
The next step is to work with Total Seal & my local engine shop to develop a proper honing procedure that will give us the full benefits of these rings, hence the need for the torque plate I recently had made. I can then share the honing specs for easy replication by your local shop, & rent out the torque plate if necessary. I'm sure you can just install these w/o any machine work & see big improvements - you just won't get 100% of their potential.
Last step will be to field test before ordering a production batch. I have the prototype set in hand with a couple more sets on the way for testing.
Cost should be between Goetze and OEM. The actual sale price has not yet been determined.
The other big key that likely makes these the best improvement is that you can use them on a bone stock engine or a 50psi fire-breathing beast, while yielding dramatic improvements for both applications.
